Artist's proof - Prints outside the standard edition
which are intended for the artist's own private collection
and use. Generally the first printings of the image, the artists
uses these to determine quality and embellishment. This is
designated in at the bottom of a print as AP.
Digital art - Artwork created on a computer, without
any traditional media original. Print- outs of digital art
are therefor not reproductions but can be thought of as multiple
originals.
Digital reproduction - A Reproduction of a physical
original piece of art using digital technology.
Documentation - Information available on the edition
of a print telling the artist's name, the printer's name,
the location of the workshop, the number of prints in the
edition, date, etc.
Edition - The total number of prints made of a specific
image and issued together from a publisher.
Embellished- A print that has original hand work added
on top of the reproduced image. Generally includes hand-coloring,
texturing or enhancing the printed image. An embellished print
can be thought of as a combination of print and hand painting
creating a unique work of art. Sometimes prints are embellished
by someone other that the artist. All of Mike McKenney's embellished
prints are embellished by the artist himself.
Giclée - An image printed on a industrial ink-jet
printer. (The term literally means "spurt " or "spray.")
Special inks produce incredibly true colors without the dot
pattern associated with offset lithography. With advances
in technology, the giclée has continued to evolve,
and has become an accepted printing method. The quality of
the inks used to print, and the substrate on which the image
is printed, affect the quality and longevity of the print.
A giclée can be either original art (when the image
is created originally in the computer) or a reproduction (when
an image is scanned into a computer, then printed.)
Limited edition - This term refers to the number of
identical prints that are available. A limited edition refers
to the fact that the print is one of a number of images in
a published edition for which a predetermined limit is set.
Once the predetermined number of prints are made, no more
are made, assuring that the edition is "limited."
Open edition - Open editions are prints that are
published with no restrictions as to the number of copies
that will be made. This is designated in at the bottom of
a print as OE.
Original digital print - A print out of digital art
that has no physical original. The original only exists in
digital form. Therefore each print can be thought of as a
multiple original.
Signed and numbered - At the bottom of each print
in an edition, the artist puts his signature and numbers the
print. The numbering appears as one number over another, for
example, 10/100. This indicates that this was the 10th print
to be created and that there were 100 prints in all.
States - (first state, second state, etc.) - changes
or corrections made by the artist which alter the printed
image. Each time the image is changed, it is said to be in
a "state."
Unique - In art, this term is applied to original
artwork. All original, one-of-a-kind pieces are unique works.
